The shared ownership industry has made huge strides since timeshares first hit the scene in the 1970s. The $10 million Dubai World Cup, the world's richest horse race, is slated to be held on March 27, 2010 at the new Meydan Racetrack in Dubai. The complex however is open and the first races of the season took place the last week in January at the start of the Dubai International Racing Carnival.

The new complex cost $2 billion to build and is quite unlike anything else in the horse racing world. In part this is due to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the ruler of Dubai and the driving force behind the racing region. In something out of another era, he had a special route built to the venue just so he can avoid traffic and arrive by boat. The complex and the Dubai creek are now linked by a 4 kilometer canal so the ruler can travel with ease and avoid any log jams that build up in the falcon shaped parking lot which has a capacity for 10,000 cars.

The team fielded by famed French jeweler Cartier beat back rivals Brioni, Maserati and Swiss banking house Julius Baer to capture the 26th World Polo Cup on Snow in St. Moritz the other day. 15,000 well-heeled spectators cheered on during the four-day event, culminating in a nail-biting finale where Cartier and Julius Baer were tied 3 - 3 up until the very last minute when Cartier won a penalty shot with only 8 seconds remaining on the clock. A team of seven well-known Swiss star chefs with a combined total of 118 Gault-Millau points catered to the guests on the chic resort's frozen lake where the matches are staged. In snow polo the ponies are shod with special cleated shoes to provide better traction, and the ball is larger, lighter, and painted bright red to accommodate winter conditions.

Earlier this month, we first heard of rumors that coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera planned to introduce a new bespoke version of the Bentley Continental GT. Now, we know that those rumors are confirmed and the vehicle in question will be an interesting shooting brake that will bow at the Geneva Motor Show early next month.

Only 20 three-door estates are planned, and they'll reportedly be built atop the buyer's choice of a regular Continental GT or an uplevel Continental GT Speed. This will be the company's first product based on a vehicle from Bentley, though past models included the likes of Ferrari, Aston Martin and Lamborghini.

We don't have many details on the actual car other than the teaser sketch above and news that there will be two rear seats that will fold independently, making for what we can only assume will be the World's Most Luxurious Six-Foot Luggage Parcel. An electrically operated folding tailgate is also on the menu.

As we first heard a couple of weeks ago, Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff's New York City penthouse, the place where he spent months under house arrest, has finally been sold. The NY Post has the scoop on the buyer. It's Al Kahn, the CEO of 4Kids Entertainment. You may not know the name but you know his brands which include Cabbage Patch Kids, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Pokemon as well as the American Kennel Club and the Cat Fanciers' Association. The sale price hasn't been revealed but the apartment was most recently listed at $8.9 million, $1 million off the original price. As with Madoff's Montauk house, which sold for $9.41 million last year, proceeds will benefit those swindled by Madoff.

One property remains, Madoff's Palm Beach, Florida house. A quick peek at Corcoran's listing reveals that the house has had another price cut. Just a couple of weeks ago it was listed at $7.9 million but is now listed for $7.25 million.

The prime co-op unit is composed of two units, an 18th-floor penthouse that O'Brien bought in 2007 for around $10 million plus an already combined unit residence on the 17th floor. The south-facing home has three terraces and views of Central Park West. The twin towered Art Deco styled Majestic has 238 apartments. It was once home to some of the former heads of the Luciano crime family (later called the Genovese crime family) including Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano and Frank Costello. The Real Estalker reminds us that in early 2008, O'Brien and his wife Liza paid $10.75 million for a six-bedroom home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, could he be staying in Los Angeles to take the helm at another late night show? More bad news out of the Lake Las Vegas development. We've been watching the resort area slowly implode since last June and now USA Today's Hotel Check-In says that the Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas will shut down at the start of May putting around 400 people out of work. The 348-room resort is owned by Village Hospitality, an arm of Deutsche Bank which has decided to case funding the hotel.

It's the latest blow to an area that has been hard hit in the recession. The resort destination, 17 miles away from the Las Vegas strip, features a manmade lake surrounded by an Italian-style village. It started off with grand fanfare as a quiet luxury alternative to the high-powered glitz of the Las Vegas strip. Real estate boomed and several different hotels settled in. But in the developer, Transcontinental Corp., lost the property in foreclosure after defaulting on $540 million in loans and the new owners of Lake Las Vegas filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2008. The Reflection Bay Golf Course at Lake Las Vegas closed last August leaving just one course, the private SouthShore course in Henderson, available for play. The Lake Las Vegas real estate market remains clogged with multimillion homes. The resort area faces many challenges including a still-slumping Las Vegas tourism market, a second home market that refuses to rebound and a water bill that runs into the millions jacking up the homeowners association fees.

They say money can't buy happiness and one millionaire asserts that it is true. The Daily Telegraph reports that Austrian millionaire Karl Rabeder has decided to give away everything it spent him a lifetime to accumulate. He has already unloaded a collection of six gliders and an Audi A8. His stone farmhouse in Provence on 42 acres is listed for sale and his villa in Tirol is being sold in a raffle with tickets available for 99 euros each. The Tirol home is a 3,455 sq ft villa with Alps views. It has a swimming pond, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor entertainment pavilion.

Rabeder sold his successful furnishings and accessories company in 2004 and supports several orphanage projects in Central and South America. He and his wife have created a micro-credit organization. They plan to use the proceeds of the house lottery, on the one hand, to pay back existing house construction loans and cover the startup costs for MyMicroCredit which will fund self-employed entrepreneurs in several South American countries. A total of 21,999 lottery tickets will be sold.

It's not the first time we've seen this type of thing. Last year after a divorce English banker Andrew Paul started the Win A New Life website to give way his his home, car and boat in a competition that anyone could enter for £20. Up for grabs were his £1.1m five-bedroom house, a £160,000 Aston Martin DBS and his £200,000 Sealine 35 Sport motor boat. He was looking to sell 200,000 tickets but did not sell the required amount of tickets for the first prize of his belongings so a cash sum was given out instead.

For a long time it has seemed that Dubai's acquisition of the Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship has been ill-fated. Dubai World acquired the ship for a reported $100 million and planned to turn it into a glamorous floating hotel in Dubai. But the anticipated renovation never took place and rumors began last year that the ship would eventually be for sale amid the general financial turmoil that has hit Dubai. Now various sources are reporting that in order to pay down some of Dubai World's massive $22 billion debt it is seeking to unload a variety of assets including the QE2. Also up for sale could be the global circus troupe Cirque du Soleil. The sell-off began last week when Dubai World's investment subsidy, Istithmar sold off a 13 percent stake in Indian domestic airline SpiceJet.

The real question is, who's buying? The Queen Elizabeth 2 was launched in 1967 and she would need a major, costly refit to be attractive as a tourist cruise ship again. Some fear that the venerable vessel may be looking at the scrap heap and other are calling for England to buy the ship to save her.

Auction giant eBay is getting into the ring design business and they are launching with a "Build Your Bling" contest that has participants designing their own diamond rings. On February 4, 2010 an on-line auction was concluded for the baseball Alex Rodriguez hit to secure his 500th career home run. A-Rod was the youngest player to do so and only one of a total of 22 players to ever attain the distinction of hitting that many homers. The ball in question brought in $103,579.00. The only other Yankees to achieve the goal are two of the greatest, Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle.

The auction was conducted by SCP Auctions who stock their auctions with quality baseball memorabilia and cards. The company has over the years partnered with Sotheby's to sell some of the most important items in baseball history including the bat Babe Ruth used to hit the first home run in Yankee Stadium ($1.265 million) and the original contract for the sale of Babe Ruth from the Red Sox to the Yankees in 1919, as well as private collections of other sports superstars such as Ernie Banks, Honus Wagner, Casey Stengel and Pee Wee Reese.

The fan, supposedly a New York area college student, who originally caught the ball on August 4, 2007 had kept the ball in good shape and you could even see where A-Rod's bat connected with the ball. Also, MLB had in expectation of the important at bat pre-marked the ball "A 107" and then after the home run placed a hologram with a serial number on the ball. This insured that the anonymous Internet buyer is assured that they are receiving the real deal. There was some discussion by the New York Daily News that the ball was sold for much less than it might have garnered due to steroid use by baseball players. It also could just be the economy, still not a bad take for a fan just out for a day at the game.

The UK-based diamond dealer sunk £8.1 million into Pablo Picasso's "Tete de Femme (Jacqueline) at the Christie's auction, spending 100 percent more than the high-end presale estimate for the piece. According to Bloomberg News, Graff confirmed the acquisition by e-mail.

Russian billionaires got back into the game, as well, and they exercised better judgment than they did during the art boom, when prices for artists such as Damien Hirst were propelled to absurd levels.

The Impressionist sector has held on rather well, by comparison. "The market for Impressionist and modern art hasn't been as frothy and speculative as contemporary," said Guy Jennings, partner in the London-based dealership Theobald Jennings. "Last year, prices might have slipped five or 10 percent, but since then there's been some asset inflation. That might not be the case in six months' time if there's a double-dip recession."

In case you're a Jones-watching type, when it comes to this year's motor yachts you can take your eyes off the Joneses for a moment and turn them to Roman Abramovich. He'll be the one with the year's largest offering, the Eclipse, a yacht already so storied we wouldn't be surprised if it came with a paparazzi deck. That is, of course, assuming the intergalactically expensive yacht even gets finished.

If it doesn't, then the number two motor yacht (pictured), the Dubai, will maintain its place. Superyachts.com has a preview of this years private floating wonders, and a breakdown of the first 100 as far as size goes. In addition to the potential addition of Abramovich, there are two other new entrants to the top ten: the novel looking Swift141, and the 134-meter Fincantieri, which has been in the works for three years. Bringing up the aft is another newcomer: the 73-meter Admiral. Just 73.5 meters will get you on the list, so there's still time to place your order with the shipyard if the economic recovery has been good to you...

It is a quartz movement that is barely visible. Look at the watch and you just won't get how it works. The dials are totally transparent and you can see right through them as the hands of the watch seem to float in space. Quinting makes the movements and the watches. The movements are quartz based and actually fitted inside the watch around the dial in the case. It uses a series of motors that move sapphire crystals that the hands are attached to. Complex models like the Chronograph use many, totally parallel sapphire discs to achieve the functionality. The design is flawless and the engineering is very clever.

I got to handle the watches at the Geneva Time Exhibition in January. They had their diverse line up of models in various case sizes and tones. Some of them are richly decorated in diamonds and are in gold. The watches typically aren't too little, but rather come in healthy sizes (for men and women). You really get an appreciation for how difficult it was to make the watches when you wear them. Seeing your wrist through the watch without any gears or pieces really goes to the heart of the "Mysterious" part of the name. Their new watch for 2010 uses an interesting set of two discs that have "spokes" on them. These turn in opposite directions and help regulate each other in terms of the watch accuracy. What it means for you is a cool looking dial that is constantly moving. Quinting also makes movements for other brands that want to showcase their technology. For example they produced a watch for Dior that I discussed here. Prices for these watch is pretty expensive for a quartz movement, but they have the craftsmanship of a nicer mechanical watch. I'd say the prices for non jewelery versions are typically in the $5,000 - $10,000 range.

There's a new show at the Eden Rock Gallery on St. Barths this month ... and it represents a bit of a departure from past exhibitions. Doubtless, some considerable talent has moved through the resort's art gallery, with names such as Richard Prince not to be taken lightly. And, the relationship with the New York Academy of Art has ensured that the artists in residence have been unmatched in talent.

The latest show is not short on talent and remains consistent with the reputation the Eden Rock Gallery has defined for itself, but the artist comes from a little closer to home. Jane Matthews will be showing her work in an exhibition entitled "Between Places and People," which features simple but direct subject matter in a fluid style slightly reminiscent of Gaugin (just a hint).

Jane owns Eden Rock with her husband, David Matthews, and it's their commitment to the arts that led to the gallery and the careful selection of pieces to hang in the property's various villas (such as Villa Rockstar).

With "Between Places and People," Jane proves that she doesn't just know how to pick art - she can create it, too. The photos alone caused me to fall in love with this show.

Until last week, the closest I'd been to the cigar rolling process was to see on-site demonstrations at cigar shops. Even then, I understood that it wasn't easy, and that the speed with which the rollers worked was the result of years invested in their chosen career. My appreciation for this activity multiplied, however, when I stepped onto the rolling floor at Pepin Garcia's My Father Cigars factory in Esteli, Nicaragua and saw what felt like endless rows of cigar rollers, each taking a specific piece of the process: filler and binder, wrapper and cap. They worked quickly and quietly, each completing hundreds of cigars a day.

To see the operation at work was impressive, but to feel it was totally different. Even trying something as seemingly simple as wrapping and capping a cigar, I learned just how much craftsmanship goes into what we cut, light and smoke.

The leaf for the wrapper is delicate. Every cigar smoker knows this, but when it's waiting to be wound around the binder, the tobacco feels downright flimsy. I worried, appropriately, that the slightest stupid move would tear it and force me to start over. As I sat in the seat belonging to Jaime Garcia, Pepin's son, to roll a cigar, I was a little nervous. So many people around me were making it look so easy, and I knew that the reality, for me at least, would be far different.

2010 Jaguar XF Supercharged - Click above for high-res image gallery

When Jaguar launched the new XF in 2008, it marked the first significant change to the brand's overall design direction since the 1960s (except for the mid-70s XJ-S which never inspired anything else). Elements of the new design language began appearing in concepts like the RD6 earlier in the decade, but it truly took the XF to break the stranglehold of retro design in Coventry. The XF set in motion a movement that continued with the introduction of the all-new XJ and will likely inspire additional models in the future.

At its launch, the XF was powered by engines that were largely carried over from its predecessor the S-Type which were by no means bad, but they were starting to fall behind the German competition. Two years into its life-cycle, the XF (along with the rest of the Jaguar and Land Rover lineup) has received a heart transplant to go along with its still fresh looking duds. We recently got to spend a week living with a 2010 XF Supercharged and you can read all about it after the jump.

Designer Grahame Fowler has opened a cool new boutique in New York's West Village, bringing British style with an original, eclectic twist to the Big Apple. He's not one of your twentysomething hipster types, but rather a seasoned multi-disciplinary creative whiz incorporating colorful experiences abroad and a healthy dose of the '60s Mod sensibility from his youth in the UK into an array of stylish designs. The small, crowded West 10th Street store, or "creative lab and retail space" as Fowler calls it, features a wealth of clothing and accessories ranging from outerwear, suits, sweaters, shirts, ties, scarves, belts and boots to chess sets, vintage Rolex watches and restored Vespa scooters. Many items display a British military and nautical influence as well, emphasized by Fowler's anchor logo adapted from his father's naval tattoo and liberal use of the Union Jack.

Barney's Creative Director Simon Doonan has become a big fan. "On the total indie front I'm loving Grahame Fowler, this incredibly hip, gorgeous microstore next to the fire station on 10th street," he declared recently. "He has the best shirts, and he's an English dude with a great mod sensibility - and I'm stuck in 1966, so I can relate." All of Fowler's unique, handmade, pieces are sourced and crafted in New York. His tailored items are characterized by relaxed silhouettes, fine fabrics and the luxury of comfort. His attention to detail is apparent in button holes varying in size and color, pastel hued elbow pads on crisp white button downs, and hidden straps inside jackets designed to hold one's newspaper. He also offers select women's pieces such as button down shirts crafted from vintage fabrics with cotton poplin details.

The home's charms include a chef's kitchen with a colorful "period-style" kitchen featuring retro-styled appliances. The home also includes a media room, gym or maids room with full bath, extensive basement areas. It's a gorgeous colorful home with Southern California details like arched windows, beamed ceilings and wood floors. It also has the requisite lap pool and spa with a tranquil hillside view. Hard to say why she's moving on and willing to take such a big price hit but someone should be willing to snap up the home in this celeb-friendly neighborhood, which has been home to Charlize Theron, Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy, Orlando Bloom, Ben Stiller and director David Lynch.

When I asked Eddie Ortega what new cigars he has coming out this year, I wasn't surprised by his response. The man behind the 601 line doesn't have anything new hitting the shelves this year, and I'm pretty happy about that. So is he. Eddie - and Ron Melendi of De La Concha and Israel Markevitz of Uptown Cigar, with whom I spoke about this issue - believes that there isn't much need for new brands right now. Retailers have plenty of product in their stores, and consumers have no shortage of choices.

The cigar market is jammed right now. Every year, more than a handful of people get the brilliant idea that retailers need another line of cigars to pitch to cash-strapped consumers, and the established players tend to bring a steady stream of new concepts, exacerbating the situation. Of course, we need this: we can't let the cigar market go stale. But, we have to cope with a lot of bad ideas to get the good ones (I'm pretty excited about the Tatuaje vintage, for example).

The decision not to venture back into the market with a new line can be intimidating: it's a break from convention, which can always be unsettling. So, it's a bit gutsy not to follow the herd, but Eddie's air of confidence is hard to ignore ... as is the fact that he's right.

Through 2010, Eddie will focus on the cigars he already has on the market and ensure that as many people as possible realize that they should puff on a 601 at least occasionally (his personal preference is for the blue label). Even without a new product this year, Eddie has enough on his plate - and we have plenty to enjoy.

The NoKo Jeans Museum is now closed.

Well, it's not really a museum - that's just what the company called its space at Vartoftagatan 47 in Stockholm ... but that's irrelevant. NoKo Jeans is now closed for good. For NoKo Jeans, just coming into existence was difficult, and the company never really got the traction it needed. It's relationship with Swedish department store PUB ended swiftly and badly, and now it's closed its other location.

The reason for all the difficulty is that NoKo Jeans are made exactly where you'd guess: North Korea. Sweden is one of the few western countries the only western country that maintains diplomatic relations with the isolated state, which made it easier for a Swedish country to get the venture off the ground.

If you still want a pair of the People's Jeans (as I do), you can still order them online. The museum may be gone, but you still can show your solidarity with the workers of the world.

Lange & Sohne was the Lange Zeitwerk. A mechanical digital watch with jumping indicators for the minutes and hours. Style was totally retro cool, and the mechanics needed to make it work are much more difficult than you can fathom. One thing many people wanted the watch to have was luminous markers. But this was thought impossible given that they could not be charged by the light being hidden under the dial. Well the creative thinkers at Lange found a solution, and they have implemented it here in the new Lange Zeitwerk Luminous watch.

Basically they made the dial out of a tinted (smoked) sapphire crystal. The numerals all have luminant applied to them. The sapphire part of the dial is made so that it is not totally transparent, but light can enter easily to charge the luminant. When the indicators are displayed in the digital windows, they should be able to charge enough, provided that the watch has been exposed to enough light. Thus you have a lume version of the Lange Zeitwerk - clever.

Aside from that the watch retains the features that we love about standard Zeitwerk. It comes in a 42mm wide case in platinum and is part of a limited edition of just 100 pieces. Movement is the highly complex manually wound in-house made A. Lange & Sohne Caliber L043.1, with its double constant force escapements. Functions include the hours and minutes digitally, with a subsidiary seconds dial and a power reserve indicator. A beautiful watch with a great appeal somewhere between luxury gadget and traditional fine timepiece. Price is $91,200, and the watch is in platinum as mentioned.

Like the British brand's sexy lingerie, the new jewelry pieces are both flirty and a little naughty. Prices range from $40 for necklaces and bracelets make out of safety pins linked by small patent leather bows to $700 for bracelets from the Dark Fairytale line. The piece shown at right is the Slave for You ring and bracelet which are made from rose gold plated on sterling silver. The bracelet and ring are linked with fine chains and the ring is embossed with 'Slave for you.' Sadly not available in men's sizes.

The program currently has 150 members and Coopa Roca hopes it will continue to grow and be a positive example for other low income communities. Yesterday my colleague Alison Stein Wellner mentioned Miraval as a great place to follow through on those possibly forgotten New Year's resolutions but you can also make your destressing a bit more permanent. Four of 16 two- and three-bedroom villas remain up for sale at the Villas at Miraval, a half hour from Tucson, Arizona. The Villas at Miraval are modern homes with beautiful mountain views but the main selling point is access to the world-renowned Miraval Spa and other world-class amenities and programs. There were 16 villas total but now just four remain available for sale. The first 12 were sold the first year.

Currently for sale are two, two-bedroom villas with 2,729 square feet of interior and 2,281 square feet of outdoor living space and two, three-bedroom villas, spanning 3,095 square feet of interior living and 3,187 square feet of outdoor living space. Prices range from $2.25 million to $3.4 million. Each villa is LEED Silver-certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. The villas use naturally gorgeous materials like stone, cedar and hickory wood. Each villa has a water-featured private courtyard, fireplace, hot tub, Viking 41 grill, single-family-sized spa pool and steam shower. Interiors have floor-to-ceiling windows, gourmet kitchens with Sub Zero under-counter wine storage, Thermador Freedom refrigerators and dishwashers, and master bathrooms with steam showers. The villas are meant to be turnkey second homes and are furnished including local artwork, special window treatments, facades, appliances and fixtures selected by New York-based award-winning spa designer Clodagh Design.

Each villa owner pays an annual fee for unlimited access to all resort programs and amenities, common area maintenance and property management, housekeeping service, roundtrip transportation to and from Tucson International Airport and a 20 percent discount on spa services, meals and retail purchases. A dedicated villas manager and concierge staff are available to assist homeowners with all their needs and requests for a total no-stress experience.
